About this lesson

The August Update brings a new default Overflow value to all layers: Clip. This value fixes all known smooth scrolling issues, all while letting you still clip the contents of your layers. It even provides performance benefits over other Overflow values, like Hidden. Plus, it seamlessly works with Sticky positioning, without requiring any changes. A perfect default all around. https://framer.com/updates/august-update-2025

0:00Yo, my name is Benjamin and this is0:03overflow clip in Framer. This new0:06property solves many issues related to0:08sticky and smooth scrolling. These0:11issues are reported quite often and0:14overflow clip solves all of these.0:17Here's what you need to know. Clip is0:19now the default value for overflow on0:22all newly created frames. For existing0:25ones, you can manually set overflow to0:28clip using the property panel. If you're0:32working with sticky elements, it's0:34recommended to now start using clip as0:37the overflow value. And this is because0:40unlike hidden, it does not break sticky0:43positioning. And unlike visible, it0:46correctly clips the content within,0:48preventing many scrolling issues on0:51mobile. Simply put, when using overflow0:54clip, which again is our new default0:57value for overflow on any frame, sticky1:01positioning and smooth scrolling just1:04work. Clip also unlocks the ability to1:07have your content overflow on one axis1:10while having it hidden on the other. For1:12example, here we have two posts that1:16don't share the same height, but we want1:18to keep the layout centered. So we can1:21resize it to match the height of the1:24smallest item. But with the hidden and1:27visible values, this doesn't work as1:30content still gets clipped horizontally1:33and vertically. However, if we use clip1:36instead of hidden, these types of1:38layouts are now finally made possible.1:41We can clip the contents horizontally1:45while overflowing vertically and vice1:48versa, unlocking all new layouts and1:51alignment options in Framer. And that's1:55it for this video. Thank you so much for1:58watching and stay tuned for more updates2:01coming soon.
